Experience Overview

In this event you will receive 2 days of focused long-range training, followed by two days of Antelope hunting under the guidance of professional guides. With this training/hunting experience, you will have the opportunity to test your equipment and skill in the wide-open plains of New Mexico. You'll start with the L102 Marksmanship Fundamentals course where you will review/develop the skills necessary to shoot a rifle precisely from a supported shooting position. It is a great starting point for a beginning rifle shooter and a good back-to-basics course for an experienced shooter. This course is designed to apply to any and all shooting equipment, not just the specialized Gunwerks systems that are exclusively used during shooting exercises. In the L103 Equipment Readiness course, you will have the opportunity to gain familiarity and confidence with your rifle and ensure it is ready for your hunt. A Gunwerks Instructor will assist you in confirming zero, validating the trajectory, and syncing it with your ballistic app or Revic BR4 Ballistic Rangefinder. You will have the opportunity to shoot targets at different ranges, using your preferred support equipment, while receiving instruction on the process to achieve first shot hits. We prefer that you bring your rifle in ready condition. We can provide troubleshooting if you have a Gunwerks system, which is our preference (obviously)! For the hunt, you will be paired up with another hunter and a guide and spend the next two days hunting pronghorn at a ranch approximately 1 hour from the Whittington Center. The hunting outfitter will provide meals and also offers meat processing and taxidermy services for an additional fee. You will also have the option to donate your meat to charity.

LRU Training Tracks Overview

Long Range University
Our course curriculum is always evolving! Over the past couple of years, we have developed a new organization of training content, facilitating a more focused and progressive learning experience. Now our courses are organized into two parallel tracks, Ballistic Science and Marksmanship Skills, culminating in our Advanced training courses.

 
Ballistic Science

The core Long Range University curriculum is contained in our Ballistic Science track. We place a heavy emphasis on the science of long-range shooting. Generally, you will spend time in the classroom introducing concepts, followed by range demonstration and exercise to solidify complex topics.

Marksmanship Skills

The second track is our Marksmanship Skills track where we place a heavy focus on developing shooting skills. Light on the classroom, these courses spend most of the time teaching practical applications on the range.

Advanced Training

When you are ready to test your skills, we offer several advanced courses to challenge you and your equipment in calculated conditions to refine your experience and capabilities.  From mountain shooting venues to pronghorn hunting in New Mexico to a precision rifle competition, we can offer you the opportunity to achieve the next level.

Located near beautiful Raton, New Mexico, the NRA Whittington Center is home to the nation’s premier hunting, shooting, and outdoor recreation facility. Founded in 1973, the Center offers ranges for every kind of shooting discipline, a shotgun center, a firearms museum, specialized firearms training, guided and unguided hunts, RV and tent camping, plus an adventure camp for younger shooters and wildlife adventurers. Our class is held at their new "Cooper Range" where we have access to 1,300 yards to shoot and give you the full Long Range Experience!

Yes, the outfitter will have meat processing on site, and can arrange for your trophy to be transported to a taxidermist. You will be responsible for fees associated with meat processing and taxidermy.

Yes, meals will be provided at the Whittington Center Mess Hall, and by the outfitter during the hunt.

The applicable laws require us to keep a Gunwerks employee physically with each rental rifle. We can not rent out more rifles than we have employees available to keep an employee with each rifle during the hunt.

No. However, note taking materials will be provided.

Yes! Our curriculum is constantly evolving.

You will need to login to the New Mexico Game and Fish website to purchase the appropriate tag, license and stamp for your hunt. Follow these steps to expedite the process: Tags: Go to https://onlinesales.wildlife.state.nm.us/. Create a new account. (If you already have an account with NMDGF, log in to that account). Once the account is created, you will be able to print a customer ID card, if you would like a copy for your records. Once your card is printed, click on the “License Sales” tab in the left margin under the Main Menu heading, and select the “OTC Licenses, Permits and Stamps”. This will allow you to add your antelope tag, hunting license and Habitat Management Access Validation Stamp to your cart. Add the following 3 selections to your cart. Game Hunting License ($65), Habitat Management and Access Validation Stamp ($4), and Private Land-only Pronghorn LIcense ($270). Please make sure you select Weapon: 1 - Any Legal Weapon and Hunt: Ant -1-238 / Aug (your hunt date) / Units 56 as shown below. Select “Review Order after all items are put in your cart. Once this is done it will ask you to pay check out. Do not forget to print your license and stamp. Your tag will be mailed to you from NMDGF, please be sure to bring all 3 documents to class (Tag, License, Habitat Stamp)!

Lodging:

Lodging is included and will be provided at the Whittington Center. Check-in will be available after 2:00 PM on the day prior to your class at the Whittington Center. We will check out of the lodging on the morning of your second hunt day. If you are flying out on a later date, there is a Holiday Inn Express in Raton NM which is a few minutes away from the Whittington Center. Meals will be provided for the duration of your event. Dinner will be provided at 6:00 PM the night of your arrival. Please let Gunwerks know if you will not be attending dinner the night before class begins.

Car Rentals:

Please make car rental plans with your flight arrangements. Gunwerks does not offer transportation to and from the facility for the course.

Lodge Directions:

From Raton NM, Get on I-25 S from NM-72 E for 3 min (1.3 mi)

Follow I-25 S and US-64 W to Rd 1/Main Rd for 9 min (9.6 mi)

Turn right onto Rd 1/Main Rd, the destination will be on the left

Once you arrive at the NRA Whittington Center, the welcome crew at the gate will assign you to a room and give you a map of the Whittington Center and directions to your cabin.

General Policies

  • All applicants for our training courses must be US citizens not legally barred from possessing firearms. For non-US citizens interested in a training course, please call us directly (307) 296-7300

  • All event attendees must complete our liability and media waiver

Student Cancellation

Hunt:
If you cancel a hunting event (other than an African hunt) more than one hundred twenty (120) days from the start of the hunt, your deposit can be moved to another class (not refundable). If canceled less than one hundred twenty (120) days from the start of the hunt, all payments toward the class are forfeited and non-refundable.

Gunwerks Class Cancellation:
In rare circumstances, Gunwerks may need to cancel a class. If this occurs, you will be notified as soon as possible and given the option of either a full refund or a move to another course of the same value. Gunwerks reserves the right to change or amend these policies at any time.

Deposit/Final Payment Schedule

  • A 50% deposit is required for reservation

  • Balance due 120 days prior to a hunt event to maintain your reservation - don't worry, we'll remind you when it's time!
